"Veronique" Now on dvd finally

Physical State: headachey
Mental State: lazy
Music: CBC Radio 3
Fashion sense: black hoodie, blue sweats

After many years of being denied a dvd transfer and upgrade, one of my favourite films is finally seeing a re-release (and on Criterion to boot). This is great news for fans of Kieslowski and it is one of Irene Jacob's best film portrayals ever. Criterion dvds cater especially to the film fan so it's great to see that this film is being picked up by them. For more info about this film you can check out this page at Criterion. Here are just some of the extras that come with the dvd:

- New, restored high-definition digital transfer
- Audio commentary by Annette Insdorf, author of Double Lives, Second Chances: The Cinema of Krzysztof Kieslowski
- Three short documentary films by Kieslowski: Factory (1970), Hospital (1976), and Railway Station (1980)
- The Musicians (1958), a short film by Kieslowski's teacher Kazimierz Karabasz
- Kieslowski?Dialogue (1991), a documentary featuring a candid interview with Kieslowski and rare behind-the-scenes footage from the set of The Double Life of Veronique
- 1966?1988: Kieslowski, Polish Filmmaker, a 2005 documentary tracing the filmmaker's work in Poland, from his days as a student through The Double Life of Veronique
- A 2005 interview with actress Irene Jacob
- New video interviews with cinematographer Slawomir Idziak and composer Zbigniew Preisner
- PLUS: A book featuring new essays by Jonathan Romney, Slavoj Zizek, and Peter Cowie, and a selection from Kieslowski on Kieslowski

Some people have asked me, so here is my previous playlist for November for my station over at Live365. Of course I can't publish the show list for the show that is up now but be sure to check back if you were wondering what got played last time. Sorry for the informality of the list (itunes hasn't developed a way of exporting the playlist as an swanky html...maybe in version 8 perhaps). I also haven't added band links so you're on your own to explore. Maybe when I get more time or more blog savvy I'll...I'm sure there is some program out there that can do it for me. I should ask the 'net's cutest tech geek Cali Lewis over at GeekBrief.tv. Have you checked out her show yet? I gotta get myself a video podcast that reviews new tech stuff so that the vendors can send me toys to try out. Smart girl that Cali.

Adrienne Shelley murdered

Physical State: achey
Mental State: lukewarm
Music: AToG on Live 365
Fashion sense: black t-shirt, jeans

To update the story from last week of Adrienne Shelley passing away it appears that her death was sadly a callous murder brought on by a noise complaint. This is truly sad news.

From the Guardian:

Construction worker: I killed Adrienne Shelly

A teenage Ecuadorean construction worker has admitted killing Adrienne Shelly, an actor who made her mark in films by Hal Hartley, in an angry exchange over noisy building renovations. Shelly, 40, who made her last appearance alongside Matt Dillon in last year's Factotum, was found dead last week in the Manhattan apartment that she used as an office.

Diego Pillco, 19, confessed under questioning that he fought with Shelly, tied a sheet around her neck, dragged her to the bathroom and hung her from the shower rod.

Shelly's body was discovered by her husband, Andy Ostroy, on November 1. Police had been hesitant to label the case a suicide, observing that no note was found and that trainer prints that did not match Shelly's shoes were recovered from a toilet seat.

Police said that Pillco had been working in an apartment located directly below Shelly. Under questioning, Pillco told them that Shelly had confronted him over noise emanating from the apartment and threatened to call the police. Pillco is then reported to have followed Shelley, pleading with her not to report him before grabbing her as she tried to enter her apartment. She tried to slap him away, and he responded by punching her in the head, a blow he said killed her.

Pillco is then reported to have claimed to hang the body in order to cover his tracks and make the slaying appear to be a suicide. But prosecutor Marit Delozier said there were no signs of serious head trauma. "This woman did not die from a strike to the head," she said. "The (medical examiner) has made it crystal clear that the victim died from compression to the neck."

Pillco was ordered held without bail pending a hearing tomorrow.

Adrienne Shelley R.I.P.

This from CBC Arts News:

Actress Adrienne Shelly, best known for her roles in American independent films of the early 1990s, has died.

The 40-year-old actress was found dead in her New York office, her agent said Thursday. Shelly's husband made the discovery Wednesday evening.

Police said they are awaiting autopsy results before deciding whether to investigate the case as foul play.

Shelly first gained attention for her lead roles in Trust and The Unbelievable Truth, the quirky first two feature-length films from indie auteur Hal Hartley.

In addition to other independent films such as Sleep With Me and Grind, she also appeared in episodes of television series such as Law and Order, Oz and Homicide: Life on the Street.

Her most recent onscreen appearance came in 2005's Factotum, a film based on a Charles Bukowski novel starring Matt Dillon.

Shelly was married to Andy Ostroy and had a three-year-old daughter, Sophie, according to her agent of about a decade, Rachel Sheedy.

Shelly had spent most of the past few years behind the camera, directing independent features.

She most recently directed the yet-to-be-released Waitress, starring Keri Russell, Jeremy Sisto and Edmonton native Nathan Fillion.

"She was so psyched about the film," Sheedy said. "She gathered an amazing cast, and she was really happy and excited to hear back from Sundance about it."

Shelley was one of my favourite Hal Hartley film actresses and I always think of the chemistry between her and Martin Donovan in Hartley's memorable film Trust. She was going to debut her new directorial feature at Sundance before dying suddenly. This is sad news indeed.
